Biology 224: Bioethics

Library guide to finding resources in Bioethics: 

Online Reference for Medical Terms and Conditions:  These online sources will give you definitions and background information regarding the topics being discussed in class. These resources are not Journal articles but electronic entries in Medical textbooks, encyclopedias, and dictionaries.

MD Consult: A Clinical Knowledge System of 71 full text journals and clinics and medical reference texts that provides online access to the most comprehensive clinical information.  Log in with your full name and Carroll ID#.   Search books for your topic or condition of interest.  You will be accessing a current collection of electronic Medical Reference Books and Textbooks.

The following Article Databases are recommended for Finding Articles for class discussions on Bio ethics Topics:

Academic Search Premier: ASP provides full text of more than 4700 academic, social sciences, humanities, general science, health science, education, and multi-cultural journals. In addition, this database offers indexing and abstracts for 8200 journals. Full-text and indexing go as far back as January 1975. 
Hint:  Select "Peer Reviewed" or Scholarly Publications to find high quality information.

CINAHL PLUS with Full Text:  (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) 1937-present; indexes over 3000 journals in the areas of nursing, allied health, physical and occupational therapy, alternative therapies, biomedicine, consumer health, and health administration. Full-text of articles is available for more than 336 journals.
Hint:  Unclick "suggest subject terms" before searching!!!

HEALTH SOURCE:  Health Source provides nearly 600 scholarly full text journals, including over 400 peer-reviewed journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Also featured are abstracts and indexing for over 615 journals. Coverage of nursing and allied health is particularly strong.  Coverage dates back to 1975.

PubMed: a service of the National Library of Medicine which provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.
Hint:  Combine search terms with AND
Hint:  If the Abstract box to the left of the article citation has a green or orange strip, the article can be downloaded from Pubmed for free.

PsycInfo: This database indexes over 4400 publications, including 1700 journals in psychology and related fields, including information on the psychological and social aspects of human behavior, medicine, physical disorders, etc., from 1887 to present.

Science Direct:  The Science Direct College Edition combines an authorative book collection with a scientific journal collection of over 2,000 titles.    Health and Life Sciences Journal Collection contains >900 full-text peer reviewed journals.  These journal and reference works are exclusive to Science Direct and not available anywhere else online.
Hint:  Select the search button at the top of the page.  The next page will have two tabs, select the Journals tab.  Select article or review and all years before searching.

 Search Term suggestions for topics in Bioethics:

Combine the following search terms and phrases with the root word  ethic* (*searches singular and plural)

  • "Genetic engineering" (use quotes to search words together)
  • Disabled Newborn* or Disabled Infant*  (searches singular and plural)
  • "Medically assisted suicide" (use quotes to search words together) or Euthanasia or Assisted Suicide
  • "Organ donation" or "living donors" or "transplant donors" (use quotes to search words together)
  • "Stem Cell**or Adult "stem cell*" or Fetal "stem cell*"
  • Human clon*  (searches singular and plural)
